Hygge, Karezza and Cozy: Get Some Comfy Lovin'

Hygge sex? Yep, it's a thing!

Have you heard of hygge? According to The New York Times, hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) is the Danish word for “cozy,” but more importantly it’s a way of life for Scandinavian cultures in the dark winter months. Think candles, comfy sweaters, big mugs of hot cocoa, and mulled wine, and you’re starting to get the idea: These are all things we turn to in order to stay happy and warm in winter. Not surprisingly, the rest of the world has caught on, and is deploying this heartwarming trend from November through March.

But what if we told you there’s such a thing as Hygge sex? Yes indeed, it is a thing, which the fine folks at Healthline have pointed out; it’s called Karezza. Here’s how to keep your bed warm with this practice when the temps drop outside.

What is Karezza?

First introduced to the world in The Karezza Method, a 1931 book written by sex theorist J. William Lloyd, Karezza (Italian for “caress”) is essentially sex slowed down, with the intention being to bond with your partner rather than focus on orgasm. The goal is to stay as relaxed as possible, breathing through the intense energy in order to prolong intimacy for as long as you can. Instead of the usual foreplay, gazing into your partner’s eyes, enjoying skin-to-skin contact, and spiritual bonding are encouraged. And when you do get to the intercourse, it’s to be done slowly and intentionally. Orgasm is not the end goal – bonding and coziness are.

How to have Karezza

Karezza isn’t a one-size-fits-all thing, but in general it consists of lots of cuddling, petting, licking, and snuggling that eventually gets more and more sensual. Smiling, listening, spooning, kissing, and touching are all encouraged as you and your partner bask in each other’s adoring attention. When it is time for intercourse, simpler positions like side-by-side, rider on top, or missionary fit the bill. Penetration should be slow and deliberate as you savor every movement and sensation. We suggest doing all of this in a comfy bed with soft sheets, fluffy blankets, and fluffy pillows for maximum hygge effect. If it's dark out, light some candles too!

Is Karezza for me?

Let’s face it, it can be difficult to deliberately avoid having an orgasm, something we’re biologically compelled to reach. But supposedly the benefits of Karezza – less painful menstruation, better urinary health, and getting a flood of feel-good hormones – can be wonderful rewards to reap. That said, we won’t judge you if you succumb to the orgasm at the end of it all. After all, the point is to be cozy, and what’s cozier than basking in that golden, post-climax glow together? So to each their own, but if you find yourself along with your partner on a freezing cold Sunday, some hygge sex might just be in order. Light lots of candles before, and enjoy a cup of cocoa or spiced wine afterwards.
