Try Outercourse for Your Next Oh!

I’ll be honest. I’m all business when it comes to self-pleasure - gimme that Oh!  Gimme that vibe, let’s get it done. I want to get to the "finish line" and feel that all-consuming euphoria, if only for a second.   While some women get this feeling during penetrative sex, many women achieve orgasm in non-penetrative ways. In one study of 1,500  women, only 18% said they climaxed from vaginal penetration alone. Thirty-six percent said they needed clitoral stimulation to orgasm, and another 36% reported that clitoral stimulation enhanced the orgasmic experience. Clearly, penetration isn’t the be-all and end-all of sex. So let’s try something new - or maybe, go back to basics. Try outercourse.

Why outercourse?

Outercourse involves grinding, kissing, rubbing, and clitorial stimulation without penetration. Sometimes outercourse may include fingering and can be done unclothed or the old-school “dry hump way” (with clothes on) to add to the thrill. Outercourse is a great partnered alternative when you need or want to avoid penetrative sex (for medical reasons, or just because). It can also be a fun way to masturbate if you want to switch things up.

Remember being a teen and having ‘almost sex’ with a partner? There’s a reason it was so fun (and frustrating). Research suggests that our whole body is capable of being sensitive to sexual stimulation, so let’s take advantage of that.

Here are a few good non-penetrative positions to have an outercourse orgasm.

Missionary

This is an all-time classic that allows you to rub your bodies against each other to create friction against the vulva. You both lie down facing each other, one person on top of the other. The top partner should ride high to get the perfect alignment and close up any space between the genitals.

The Chairman

Have your partner sit on a chair and sit on their lap, facing away from them. Make a back and forth motion of grinding to stimulate your clitoris. While at it, you get nipple fondling and neck kisses from behind. Take it a notch higher by moving your knees closer to your chest and putting your weight on your partner. It gives room for your partner to use a clit toy on you if grinding is not quite enough to get you there.

Pretzel Dip

Sit in a relaxed position with spread legs and bent knees, then recline back against the pillow. Let your partner press back your knees toward your head and rub against you. Try crossing your legs and allowing your partner to push them toward your chest for a new angle and sensation.

Couch Grind

Just a couch and you! Ride the arm of a couch fully clothed. Begin with small gentle movements and steadily build up a consistent hum of pressure until you climax. A pillow can work too. If you want to involve your partner, have them watch (they can touch themselves, too!)

Mirror Play

This is for solo play (or for putting on a show for your partner). With a mirror in one hand, hold up one of your legs, resting it on a chair. Position your leg so that you can get a clear view of your vulva. Use a vibrator to massage your labia, and all around your clitoris. Try different motions and degrees of pressure and note the difference in sensation. By watching yourself and paying close attention, you can find out what spots and intensity give you that comfortable sensation you love.

It's time to go back to being that horny teenager. Remember to protect yourself if you are grinding with a partner. Condoms, dental dams, gloves, and finger cots can be used to avoid contact with sexual fluids. Lastly, use lubes to reduce friction and prevent skin irritation.
