Going out into nature is good for you. According to the American Psychological Association, spending time outdoors is a boon for your mental health and beneficial for your cognition. It can even make you a more empathetic person, as well as boost your mood and decrease stress. To that end, if you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to have sex out in nature, you’re not alone – and we’re not just talking about on the beach, either. We’re imagining making out in the woods in summer, getting it on under a big tree with fall colors above us, and venturing into sunny fields for some serious action. Sound appealing? Well, before you run out the door with your partner, read our tips and tricks for doing it au natural in nature.

Be prepared

Spontaneity can be seriously erotic, as anyone who’s ever had unexpected sex can tell you. However, if you’re doing it out in nature, you do want to have the foresight to be prepared. For example, will it be a sunny area? If so, don’t forget the sunblock or you may wind up with a sunburned behind. Additionally, don’t forget the blanket, and be sure to bring the bug spray if you’re in an area with insects – it’s their home, after all. If you’re hiking to a specific location, don’t forget to bring some snacks, too, as both activities will work up an appetite. Finally, don’t neglect to bring all you need to practice safer sex, as well as clean up afterwards.

Consider a camping trip

Camping trips are ideal times to get it on with the starry sky above you and the grass underneath you. If you do it inside your tent, you have the added bonus of built-in privacy. If you’re having sex outside of your tent, be sure to do so in an area that’s not heavily populated for obvious reasons. If you’re at a sanctioned campground, there may also be facilities on site that will allow you to shower afterwards too, which is a plus for folks who need to clean up afterwards. Bonus points for camping at a notably beautiful place, like a state park with a clear spring or a mountain with stunning views.  

Know the rules

Speaking of getting caught, it’s pretty important to know the rules of the area you’ve selected for your lovemaking. You don’t want to get arrested for indecent exposure, after all, and you don’t want to be seen by kids or families strolling by. There’s also the fact that pretty much everyone has phones with cameras nowadays, and the last thing you want is to end up on the internet in a non-consensual manner. So do a little legwork beforehand when you’re selecting the location for your zesty activities, which will pay off in dividends.

Put thought into positioning

You can have a lot of fun with this one! Are you planning on having sex under a blanket or a big tree? Consider the best positions for your unique situation. If you’re up for it, incorporate that tree into your sex session by having your partner lift you against it. If you’re an exhibitionist under a blanket, chances are spooning will be your best option, as any passersby won’t be able to tell what you’re doing (note: respect other people's right not to be included in your lovemaking). And if you want to be the one gazing up at a beautiful sky during a sunset or at midnight, be sure to be the one laying on your back so you can take in all of the sites nature has to offer.
